New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 is one of the largest public works projects in America. It is a 60 mile tunnel that was planned in 1954 and won't be complete until 2020 at least. It is a 24 foot wide tunnel 800 feet below the surface of NYC and will bring fresh water to the city. Tunnel 1 was completed in 1917 and has not been maintenanced in almost 100 years. No one has the courage to turn it off. Tunnel 2 was completed in 1936. Once Tunnel 3 is complete the others can be repaired.

TUNNEL NUMBER 3 Deep under Manhattan is the largest construction project in city history. So far, the project has taken the lives of 23 workers, or "a man a mile.
