Side Table with Carved Details
The form may be simple and Shaker inspired, but the details on this end table add an extra level of elegance. The legs are turned and tapered, with a slight swelling at the top. The feet are turned from a contrasting wood. And the leaf carving at the tops of the legs looks great and adds some lessons in carving to the project.

Use a plug to turn an applied foot, then use the lathe as a clamp during glue-up
Use a plug to turn an applied foot by David Lamb — In his article "Side Table with Carved Details" (FWW #288), Lamb uses a mortise-and-tenon to apply contrasting feet to his table's legs. He drills each foot's while they're still square and then turns them. To let him secure the feet in the lathe, he fills that mortise with a plug.

DIY Lathe Toolrest Height Stop
Toolrest Height Stop By Brian P. Mitchell, Somerset, Colo. -- When you need to maintain one height setting for your lathe’s toolrest, but have to constantly change its angle (as when faceplate turning) tighten a small hose-clamp on the toolrest’s shank. This will prevent it from slipping down as you adjust it. Drawn by Jim Richey

Turned candlesticks
Tim Heil turned 30 candlesticks of this design for the American Association of Woodturners’ 30th anniversary a few years ago. He’s turned more than 600 of these candlesticks in all. They are based on a famous design by Rude Osolnik, but differ in that Tim uses a brass insert to support the candle. The sticks taper to 3⁄16 in. dia. at their thinnest part. Maple, walnut, and sapele “wedded rings” bowl
Marc Holden, a woodworker in San Diego, made this “wedded rings” bowl for the marriage of Amanda and Ben, his two dear friends. “I cut a square maple blank on a bias, planed the faces, and sandwiched a thin sheet of walnut,” he said. “After that dried, I cut the block horizontally and inserted a thin sheet of sapele. Turning the resulting blank revealed the embedded interlocking rings!” MAPLE, WALNUT, SAPELE, 7-1⁄2 DIA X 3H Photo: Shoot Through Studios

Add color and texture to a turned bowl
The grounded, bottom-heavy shape of Mark Gardner’s bowls makes them great for serving food and also a prime canvas for surface embellishment—texture, color, and contrast. Gardner demonstrates the steps involved in making one of his colorful bowls, from cutting a log to the initial rough turning and drying, to the final finishing touches with milk paint and gouge work for the texturing.
