How to build a handsome tool chest
This chest-on-chest tool cabinet has a traditional solid-wood upper carcase, but the lower cabinet has a hybrid structure. To accommodate large drawers filled with heavy items while also supporting a tool-filled upper case, this part of the chest combines a solid-wood frame-and-panel outer carcase with a biscuited Baltic-birch plywood interior case.

North Bennet Street School toolbox
Art LaMan Mansfield, Mass. North Bennet Street School, 2019–21 The NBSS tool box is the first major project in the Cabinet and Furniture Making program. Art made the case using a housed tapered dovetail. This let him add a new joint to his repertoire and try a coved edge on the molding. On the drop-down door (not shown), he used an escutcheon inlay from a piece of abalone stock that belonged to his grandfather. Mahogany, hard and soft maple, 16-3⁄8D x 28-1⁄2W x 16-5⁄8H

Clever multilevel tool storage
When Rick Long made swing hinged trays for the side drawers, he was adapting a drawer design he had admired in a jewelry box. The tray in this drawer contains layout tools by Starrett, Lufkin, and Brown and Sharpe. “I find them hard to pass up!” Long says. Nesting underneath is a collection of Buck Brothers carving gouges.

Cherry tool chest
Larry Graubner made this cherry tool chest in 2016 after admiring one like it in Greg Pennington’s Windsor chair shop. “I have 27 drawers and I know exactly what is in each drawer because I regularly work out of the chest,” he said. He often updates and customizes the tool holders as he adds new hand tools to the mix. CHERRY, 16D X 40W X 85H @ljgraubner, Nolensville, Tenn.

Hand-tool cabinet
This is Todd Zucker’s second tool cabinet. He built the first with power tools. “I had only three inherited handplanes at the time, and the finished cabinet looked really empty. I started adding planes and chisels to my collection and soon ran out of room.” He built this one almost entirely with his growing collection of hand tools. This cabinet was inspired by the H.O. Studley cabinet published in FWW years ago. “I have loved that cabinet since I first saw it,” said Martin Jones, a fourth-generation woodworker whose father introduced him to the craft. “Several of the tools are cherished family heirlooms, a couple are antiques, a few I made, some I have had for decades, and some are new,” he said. Michael Turner built this box as part of his learning experience at North Bennet Street School. All students are required to design and build a toolbox within the given parameters. “It’s a great feeling loading my tools into this at the end of the day, knowing the time and effort involved in making it and the lessons learned,” he said.
