White Australia policy (1949-1973) restricted non-white immigration to Australia

This badge from 1910 was produced by the Australian Natives' Association, comprising Australian-born whites. Prime Minister Alfred Deakin was a member. It shows the use of the slogan "White Australia" at that time.

On 23 December 1901, the Immigration Restriction Act came into law. It had been among the first pieces of legislation introduced to the newly formed federal parliament.  The legislation was specifically designed to limit non-British migration to Australia and allowed for the deportation of ‘undesirable’ people who had settled in any Australian colony prior to federation.  It represented the formal establishment of the ‘White Australia policy’.

In 1973 the new Whitlam government took the final steps to dismantle the 'White Australia' policy and remove race as a factor in Australia's immigration provisions.

Jan O’Hoy BEM (1913-1980) Jan was born in the Toishan district son of Bendigo storekeeper.  He arrived in Australia in 1923. Receiving both a standard Western and a traditional Chinese education, Jan bacame an interpreter between the two cultures. As Secretary of the Bendigo Chinese Association  and can be given much of the credit for the survival of the Chinese contribution to the Easter Parade as community numbers declined dramatically due to the strictures of the White Australia Policy.
