The ancient Egyptians believed that when they died, they went to the Hall of Death, where Anubis weighed their heart against the feather of Ma’at (the Goddess of Justice), who would sit on top of the scale to make sure that the weighing was being done properly. If their heart was lighter than the feather, they would be able to live forever. If their heart was heavier than the feather, it was then eaten by by a demon called Ammit, the Destroyer.
