When a visitor looks upon the wall, his or her reflection can be seen simultaneously with the engraved names, which is meant to symbolically bring the past and present together. The selected design was very controversial, in particular its unconventional design, its black color and its lack of ornamentation, especially among veterans. Many publicly voiced their displeasure, calling the wall "a black gash of shame."

Maya Lin's submission for the Vietnam Memorial contest. She won at 20 years of age. The memorial is considered one of the greatest works of sculpture/architecture in the world.

Maya Lin, Water Line. This artists work with lines and shape is inspirational for my concept of growth. The repetition of the same shape over and over again is something I would like to explore using origami tessellations. The movement and variety of earths surfaces is also something I want to explore.
