GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, ARIZONA, USA The Grand Canyon is proof that nature really is the greatest architect. Every few years, a rare weather phenomenon called “temperature inversion” fills the valley, giving the impression of a blanket of clouds covering the ravine.

**Punch Hole Clouds may appear as a circular or oval holes in a layer of supercooled clouds. Sometimes they assume a form of a perfect circle and persist for quite a long time, drifting together with the cloud layer. One explanation seems to blame the air traffic (the jet contrail intersections) combined with a thermal inversion (a circular motion of a rising warm air). (Image credit Joel Knain)

Air Pollution Temperature Inversion Phenomenon

This diagram of a temperature inversion illustrates the way in which a layer of warm air traps a layer of cool air, and with it pollution, close to the ground. Without this inversion layer pollution would be able to rise into the atmosphere and disperse.

Love this!

Nature is awesome

This is a rare meteorological phenomenon called a ‘SKY PUNCH’. When people see these, they think it’s the end of the world. Ice crystals form above the high-altitude cirro-cumulo-stratus clouds, then fall downward, punching a hole in the cloudcover.
