July 1, 1912: Maine's 42-acre Malaga Island founded by Benjamin Darling, an ex-slave, ceased to exist. The State of Maine had driven the mixed race residents from their home— ridding this island of "its shiftless population of half-breed blacks and whites." Some were placed in the Maine Home for the Feeble Minded. Seventeen bodies were disinterred from the cemetery and reburied in five caskets on the grounds of the Maine Home for the Feeble Minded.

Famous accounts of Barbary slave raids include a mention in the diary of Samuel Pepys and a raid on the coastal village of Baltimore, Ireland, during which pirates left with the entire populace of the settlement. Such raids in the Mediterranean were so frequent and devastating that the coastline between Venice to Malaga suffered widespread depopulation, and settlement there was discouraged. In fact, it was said that this was largely because 'there was no one left to capture any longer'.

Benjamin Darling, a freed slave, bought the nearby Horse Island in 1794. His son Isaac sold it and probably moved to the unoccupied Malaga Island in 1847. From the 1860s until 1912, a community of laborers and fisherman lived on Malaga Island, off the coast of Phippsburg. A controversial community for its time, white and black residents married and lived together on the small island, until the state of Maine evicted them in 1912.
