Geology in a jar 3
Firstly I have to thank lilfishstudios - www.lilfishstudios.blogspot.com/ - for the inspiration and idea of felting in a jar. Her wonderful terrariums inspired me to recreate a cross section of planet earth, from the molten core to the green grass, complete with grazing sheep. Basically layers of wool, with a few bits and bobs of wooly leftovers added.
Understanding Earthquakes and Volcanoes...with snack foods! (Part 1) - Canadian Red Cross Blog
We loved this blog from our friends at RedCrossPDX in Oregon, we decided to post it. There are some easy ways to demonstrate how volcanoes and earthquakes work! Last year I was fortunate to work wi…

Earth Science: Plate Movements & Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Mountain-Making
Here's our hands-on studies of tectonic plate movements, 2nd grade style. We used: a tray with a thin layer of chilled jello (jelly) graham crackers for the earth's crustal plates colored icing (green-continents and blue-oceans) You can see LD putting the continent and ocean onto his plate (ie. graham cracker). We read about the plates and tectonic plate movement and looked carefully at this map. We talked about how when earth was one giant super-continent (Pangaea), India was actually…
Plate Tectonics Foldable
This product is designed to align with SOL 5.7 e Plate Tectonics. The foldable compares and contrasts the three types of plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, and transform. Students cut out the cover cards and glue them onto the front of a three flap shutter fold foldable. Then, students sort th...
Earth Science - Structure of the Earth and Plate Tectonics
Read the Meredith Hooper Book 'The Island That Moved' - this is a little long winded for younger listeners, you can shorten the story a bit by paraphrasing it onto post-it notes ready to read to them. Then we sat around together and I reminded the children about the end of our last session when we made a fossil sandwich..... Do you remember the last time when we talked about fossils and how they were buried under the earth? Do you remember the fossil sandwich that we made? How do you think…
Worksheet: Plate Tectonics Study Guide and Practice
This worksheet helps student's understanding of plate tectonics and how plates interact with one another at their boundaries. Students will use the front of the worksheet as a reading selection and study guide and on the back is a practice to test their understanding. Key included!A larger version o...

I am always looking for hands on ways to teach about the world around us. Sometimes explaining or showing pictures isn't enough. Kids need to touch, feel, manipulate and explore a subject before they truly understand it. That is why I was really excited about these activities which teach about plate tectonics and how land forms are created. The first activity is a sensory tub. I made this tub by taking a piece of foam paper and cutting it in to separate pieces. I drew a basic map of the…
