HIV is a serious problem also within Internationally Displaced Communities on Thai-Burma border. Research, Publication and Documentation (RPD) provides campaign education materials on women health. It designs, produces, and disseminates culturally appropriate materials in Burmese, Karen, and other ethnic languages such as Chin, Karenni, Lahu, Mon, Kachin and Shan.
Thanks to approval of protease inhibitors in 1995 - and advancements made since, the AIDS death rate has fallen by 70%. If diagnosed today, one could be kept symptom-free for years. In 1996, Time named AIDS researcher David Ho Man of the Year. The introduction of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors -- the second class of drugs that interfere with the transcriptase enzyme that plays a key role in the life cycle of HIV. This new drug binds to the enzyme so it can't copy itself.
