This is the oldest street in York, and it is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. In the late 19th century, it was known as the 'The Great Flesh Shambles' because of the large number of butchers in the street. The meat would hang in the shadows of the overhanging buildings away from the sun. As recently as 1872 there were twenty-five butchers' shops in the street, but now there are none.
