Sierra Leone is experiencing a third wave of COVID-19, and school-age kids like Mbalu, 12, aren’t sure what’s in store for upcoming year. She just got a new backpack from ChildFund, but she’s not sure if she’ll get to use it. “I pray that by the time school reopens, the virus will be gone for good," Mbalu says. "Back-to-school is about moving to a new class, meeting old friends and making new ones. It is also about freedom. I miss those moments when I would play with my friends freely."
