School in 1890: The West Babylon school population, ca. 1890. This photo was taken at the rear entrance to the wooden one-room schoolhouse that stood, at the time, at the intersection of Elmwood Road and Farmingdale Road (now Route 109). The front entrance had two doors; one for boys and one for girls. This building continued to serve as the only school in West Babylon until 1907, when it was replaced by a new structure. An advertising postcard for Bulk's Nurseries, showing the property as it appeared shortly after being acquired by Jack Bulk in 1924. The landmark windmill was not built until 1929. Mr. Bulk, a native of Holland, lived in the large Victorian house pictured on the left of the photo, which stood on the south side of Montauk Highway. The farmhouse on the far right still stands, and the field to the right of it is now occupied by the West Babylon Manor apartments (Cassata Court). The homes on the lower left were replaced by a medical clinic and the now Foodtown shopping center.

Mathiasis Lake, located next to the home on the corner of Park Avenue and Levant Avenue, in a ca. 1920 postcard view. Longtime local residents remember ice skating at this site as children. The house pictured remains virtually unchanged from the time of this photo, although the surrounding trees and bushes have grown considerably. The owner, Jack Bulk, was a native of Holland who lived on the property. The 4-story tall windmill was built in 1929 from Dutch blueprints, and originally served as the business office. Robert Moses, participating in the cornerstone laying ceremony of the Santapogue Elementary School on Herzel Boulevard, in the fall of 1951. The school opened in September of 1952, relieving the overcrowded situation at the Main School on Muncy Avenue. Mr. Moses lived in Babylon for over fifty years. A postcard view of the Main School, built in 1930 on the west side of Great East Neck Road, at Muncy Avenue, the present site of the Holiday Square apartments. The 12-room building opened with 8 teachers and students from K-10 (older students were sent to Babylon High School). A postcard view of the Main School, built in 1930 on the west side of Great East Neck Road, at Muncy Avenue, the present site of the Holiday Square apartments. The Great South Bay Shopping Center as it appeared shortly after opening, in 1957. A two-story A&S department store occupied the present site of National Wholesale Liquidators. The last remaining original store pictured here was Pergament, which only recently moved across Montauk Highway, next to K-Mart. This site was formerly farmland which, in the mid-19th century, was owned by the family of Walt Whitman. The house they lived in on the property was later moved to Park Avenue in Amityville. The Great South Bay Shopping Center as it appeared shortly after opening, in 1957. A two-story A&S department store occupied the present site of National Wholesale Liquidators. The only signs of development are the telephone poles along the right-hand side of the then one-lane road. The barber shop was demolished along with many other buildings on the west side of Great East Neck Road, when it was widened some years later. The identity of Mr. Salerno's customer is unknown.
