Five for Friday! Holla!!! - Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits

At our school we can’t say Friday without saying “Holla!” Our principal started it 2 years ago on morning announcements. You know that if you start something with 6 year olds it becomes one of the Ten Commandments you better be prepared to say it for the rest of the year! Five for Friday #makethat6 #1 […]

It's All In A Name! Using Children's Names In The Beginning of Kindergarten!

Beginning of the year Kindergarten is best spent focusing on names! There is so much 'learning' that can occur from names that it makes it a worthwhile use of instructional time- plus it is a great way for students to get to know each other! This week my kinders are starting 'centers' (I use the term loosely because we are calling them 'centers' but we are not traveling about the classroom and/or using a workboard!) Here is a peek at some of the name activities we will be doing! Name of The…

Sight word watches...love this

Time for Sight Words....Watches!!

I love teaching sight words because I LOVE finding new ways to make sight words FUN! Don't get me wrong, I am totally a phonics girl too. However,

Morning Routine/Sing-A-Longs: In Kindergarten especially, morning routines that include sing-a-longs are extremely important to get brains woke up and ready to learn! This was an activity that I created in my practicum K class that the kids loved! Everyday we had a "Word of the day" that the helper picked from our magic bag. We filled in the blanks of the song with this word, and sang through our new tune twice together, and the students even sang once alone!

The Cookie Sheet Challenge! - Make Take & Teach

It all started with a cookie sheet. I was observing a student in a kindergarten classroom during literacy center time and in one of the centers the teacher placed magnetic letters on a cookie sheet and the students made words with the letters. Clever– I’ve seen cookie sheets on Pinterest before and really hadn’t paid […]

Syllable Fun!

I LOVE playing literacy games with my students...so this week we focused on learning all about syllables. It went really well with the letter we are learning to print, "D", since we talked about how syllables and drum beats are similar. I had each student stand up one at a time and together as a class we practiced clapping that student's name using our syllables. All day long, I asked students to do different things such as: "If your name has 2 syllables, go wash your hands for snack" or "If…
