Nottaway Plantation-5524 Nottaway Plantation, located near the town of White Castle, Louisiana, on the banks of the Mississippi river is the probably the largest plantation manor home still standing today. The “White Castle” as it is often referred to mixes traditional Greek Revival with…
We have returned from our trip, a bit road weary, but nonetheless filled with memories of time spent with friends and family. I was recently thinking about the blessed French and their great tradition of taking a month long holiday in August. Although school will start next Monday here in Phoenix, I thought this blog could serve as a literary traveling holiday for the next few weeks. We’ll begin with a trip to New Orleans. NOTTOWAY PLANTATION HOUSE AND HISTORY
Nottoway Plantation, the house, 42 slave houses, barns, storage and equipment buildings, was built between 1855 and 1859. John Randolph was the original owner and builder and named it for his native Nottoway County in Virginia. Godchaux-Reserve Plantation Home
Originally constructed around 1820 the house was modified to its present appearance in about 1850. The house has been moved twice to avoid demolition - with hopes of restoration. This house did not face the Mississippi River when it was built. Since it's last move in 1993 it now faces the levee and the river. Located on River Road in Reserve, Louisiana. It may look a little strange and that is because the outside stairs to the second story are missing.
