An aerial shot of Butlin's Clacton Holdiay Camp from c.1965. The densely packing of the chalets would ensure that few guests would experience sunshine through their windows. The site was taken over and developed almost immediately after construction for wartime use as a training site for the Pioneer Corps as the picture makes clear.

Middleton Tower Holiday Camp in 1955. Opened in 1939 by Japanese businessman Harry Kamiya, it covered 60 acres of seafront land south of Morecambe, Lancs, complete with the 2000-seat theatre, the 'SS Berengaria', which was built in 1949 in the style of a 1930s ocean liner. It was acquired by Pontins in 1964 and all the old wooden chalets were demolished.
