Morning Work Journals for 1st Grade
What does your morning routine look like? If you're like many of us, it may feel a bit rushed and include some amount of time waiting in line for the copy machine, hoping the person in front of you doesn't do something to jam it up. One thing we did to streamline our mornings was to begin using morning work journals with digital prompts for the children to respond to in their own notebooks. It has taken that piece off my teacher-plate and given me more time to do other tasks in the morning. Plus, the children love the prompts and look forward to them each day. If you're curious, but have a few questions... "What if a child can't read the prompt?" "What if a child finishes early?" "What if I'm already doing a morning meeting?"... head over to this blog post to find out how we're doing it.

Our Class Is a Family Activities for K-1
Our Class Is a Family by children's book author Shannon Olsen has become a back to school favorite in kindergarten and first grade classrooms. We definitely think it deserves a spot in your stack of read-alouds for the first day of school. The book's message is simple, but important: A group of people who care about each other is a family. It's perfect for the first day of school and introduces children to key concepts like respect, kindness, perseverance, and teamwork. When you're done reading it to your students, follow up with activities that will help the children go a little further with their thinking. We've got some ideas to share in this blog post for kindergarten and first grade teachers. Before you wrap up your back to school lesson plans, come grab some new ideas. Let's plan!
