The Biedermeier period refers to an era in Central Europe during which the middle-class grew and arts appealed to common sensibilities in the historical period between 1815, the year of the Congress of Vienna at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and 1848, the year of the European revolutions. Although the term itself is a historical reference, it is predominantly used to denote the artistic styles that flourished in the fields of literature, music, the visual arts and interior design.

Thomas Seymour sold this spectacular commode to Elizabeth Derby West, daughter of the wealthy merchant Elias Hasket Derby, for her home, Oak Hill, in South Danvers, Massachusetts. Globular work-table of pine, veneered with mahogany and inlaid in the upper segment of the globe with satinwood medallions which are painted with the signs of the zodiac. The lower segment is supported on tripod feet, each fitted at the top with a satyrs head of carved and gilded pearwood. Interior fittings of satinwood, maplewood and ebony.
