Propaganda images like this one can often warp our intepretation of history. Although children certainly served in the latter period of the Second World War, we should remember that it was extremely rare for a child of under 10 years of age to serve (which this kid seems to be).

October 1, 1940. The image of a child breaking free of his mother’s hold to reach out to his father became one of the enduring images of WWII. It was taken by Claude Detloff at Columbia and 8th Street in New Westminster, Vancouver as the soldiers of the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles marched off to fight in the Second World War.

This is the Elephant and Castle Tube station in London during the height of the Blitz. I've been in this Tube station--it was full of tourists and home-going office workers. I chose this picture of a Nazi enforcing the laws on this young girl. I chose this because it shows how Hitler, and the Nazi Party were brainwashing the kids. The children were so young that they couldn't comprehend what was going on.
