To me this line in the movie is really sad because not only is it true for the movie, but also if you realize that River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton were best friends at that time..and then they weren't later on. They didn't even have contact with each other anymore, according to Wil this was of course because of River's drug use. It's all very heartbreaking.
