Easy Ways to Teach Numbers, Counting & Maths

Numbers, Numbers everywhere.... we are all about numbers this week leading up to the celebration of Numeracy Week here in Queensland. I put some glitter paint into zip lock bags for Master 4 to practice writing his numbers. When teaching numbers I find children respond really well if they are able to touch and feel numbers and make numbers in different textures. Though preschoolers generally don’t recognise it, maths is another way to understand and make sense of the world, much like…

Adding Fun

So, I totally didn't make this, but it was hanging up in my classroom last week (Thanks, Terri!), and I totally love it (and the kids REALLY enjoy it). It's super easy to make. All you need is a piece of poster board (Dollar Store sells them for $.50), 2 paper cups, 2 paper towel roll insides, a basket or bowl, beads/counters/beans, etc. and a marker to draw the plus sign! These are all simply taped to the poster board using packaging tape. My older students love to experiment with bigger…

This is by no means an all inclusive list. Have some other ideas? Please add them to the comments, including links to your favorite math activities. T-Shirt Download {FREEBIE}

Awhile back I saw this pin and kept thinking I need to do that. It took me longer than I wanted but I finally got around to getting it together. I bought a $1 pack of kids' size clothes hangers. The wire ones may be easier to get the shirts on and off of though. I made these little shirts and punched a hole in the top. The original pin focused on making sums to 10. Below you can see where we've practiced doing that but I also wanted to include the shirts with numbers 1-10 for preK and kinder…

Tuesday Teachings - Math Activity

We have been trying to work on our counting skills at my house so I whipped up a little activity for him to work with. Supplies: Construction Paper Marker Glue Pipe Cleaner/Chenille Stems Scissors Beads Cut strips of construction paper about 1 inch wide and 2 inches long. You will need one for each number you want to work on. Fold the strips in half and write a number on one side. I cut my pipe cleaners in half since they are originally so long. Now glue the paper around the top of the pipe…
